Nice to learn Lucifer's are back! I never thought to look "down" to see the eclipse. :-)

That shadow is all that's left of the giant elderberry tree--a terrific windstorm last Friday snapped off the upper 15 feet...spend most of yesterday on the porch roof with the chainsaw...

Fabulous post! I can’t imagine having all those hummers as yard birds since I only have ruby-throated here! It has been so many years since I saw a Lucifer’s on a long-ago Arizona birding trip. What amazing photos you got.

Thanks Deb! Pretty active this morning. Three Lucifers now, with a female joining two males. Eight species of hummingbirds right now! Lots more photos!

Thanks Jojo! And thanks for the article about Dick and the anthology from 1977! I sent Michael a note about it--this year I hope to publish an anthology of writing from 50 years of Dick's workshops...

I’m so glad you share all these hummingbirds! I’m so glad these hummingbirds exist.

Me too. There's something right with a world that created hummingbirds!

Oh, sorry about your elderberry tree! The little one you gave me didn't die after all. It's sprouting from the bottom but I don't think it's happy here.

They do take a lot of water... The wood is very soft so they're prone to breakage. I've worried about this one for some time--glad it didn't smash the porch!

Gorgeous! I love the metaphor of the Lucifer's bringing back the light. And that photo of the eclipse in the shadows is exquisite. Thank you, Ken.

Thanks Susan--yeah, talk about a metaphor slapping you in the face... Nice to see the Lucifer back again this morning, with a girlfriend!

Oh, what a gorgeous photograph of Lucifer the light bearer, with his magnificent purple gorget.

No relationship to

‘Samael’ the fallen archangel .

And how did the devil get a name defined as “light bearing”?

Just a few momentary thoughts…

Yep, Lucifer--literally "Light Bearer." I think the name stems from the Angel of Light before his fall... Thanks! Lots more photos this morning--he's brought along a girlfriend!
